WE and AASTMT inaugurate Cybersecurity Innovation Lab in Smart Village

Must read

Cybersecurity took another step towards becoming a strategic pillar of Egypt’s digital economy after the official inauguration of a new Cybersecurity Innovation Lab at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Smart Village.

The facility forms part of the WE Innovate Star programme, an innovation platform led by Egyptian telecommunications operator WE, aimed at supporting applied research, entrepreneurship and technology development in emerging digital sectors.

The initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between WE, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, reflecting growing efforts to strengthen links between academic research and practical technology deployment.

The launch comes as Egypt accelerates investments in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure to support its broader digital-transformation agenda and position itself as a regional technology hub.

Building Egypt’s Cybersecurity Talent Pipeline

The new laboratory is designed to provide students, researchers, entrepreneurs and start-ups with access to advanced facilities for developing and testing cybersecurity solutions in real-world operating environments.

The project aligns with Egypt’s National Cybersecurity Strategy 2023-2027, which prioritises the development of specialised national capabilities, innovation in digital-security solutions and stronger cooperation between regulators, educational institutions and private-sector companies.

Alongside the launch, WE Chief Executive Officer Tamer El Mahdy and AASTMT President Ismail Abdel Ghaffar signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at expanding specialised training programmes, technical mentoring, applied workshops and collaborative research initiatives.

Officials said the partnership seeks to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements while improving the readiness of graduates to participate in Egypt’s rapidly evolving technology sector.

From Research to Commercial Innovation

The Cybersecurity Innovation Lab forms part of a broader network of specialised innovation centres being developed under the WE Innovate Star programme.

The initiative is designed to support innovators through the full development cycle, from academic research and concept validation to prototype development, product testing and commercial scaling. The programme aims to help transform promising ideas into market-ready technologies and high-growth start-ups capable of competing regionally and internationally.

Unlike traditional university laboratories focused primarily on research, the facility is intended to serve as an innovation platform where cybersecurity applications, artificial-intelligence tools and advanced digital solutions can be developed, tested and refined for commercial deployment.

Strengthening Egypt’s Regional Technology Ambitions

The launch reflects a wider trend across the Middle East as governments seek to build domestic cybersecurity capabilities amid rising digitalisation and growing cyber threats.

For Egypt, the significance extends beyond skills development. Creating specialised innovation infrastructure supports efforts to attract technology investment, nurture start-ups and increase the local development of cybersecurity products and services.

As digital transformation accelerates across sectors ranging from finance and telecommunications to government services and industrial operations, demand for cybersecurity expertise is expected to grow significantly. The WE Innovate Star initiative seeks to position Egypt to capture part of that expanding market while developing a new generation of technology entrepreneurs and cybersecurity specialists.

The new lab therefore represents more than an academic facility. It forms part of a broader effort to build a sustainable innovation ecosystem capable of supporting Egypt’s ambitions to become a regional centre for digital technology, cybersecurity and applied innovation.
