Microsoft has unveiled the “Copilot” key, marking the most significant change to Windows keyboards in 30 years. This innovation will introduce an AI-powered assistant directly at users’ fingertips, simplifying and enhancing the computing experience.
Announced on Thursday, the Copilot key will soon be integrated into new PCs from a variety of manufacturers running Windows. Microsoft is dubbing 2024 as “the year of the AI PC,” as this feature allows users to engage with Copilot, Microsoft’s AI chatbot, at the press of a button. The development follows Microsoft’s substantial $13 billion investment in OpenAI, the technology driving Copilot.
Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer, highlighted the transformative nature of this update in a company blog post. “This new key will not only make it easier but also more intuitive to use AI in everyday tasks,” Mehdi stated, noting the seamless integration of AI across the Windows ecosystem.
Positioned near the Space bar and Alt button, the Copilot key features a distinctive ribbon logo, heralding a new era for Windows keyboards. This is the first major keyboard update since the introduction of the Windows key in 1994, which became standard on devices from leading manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, and HP.
The announcement comes just before the CES tech convention, where further AI innovations are expected. Over the past year, tech giants have accelerated efforts to embed AI across their product lines, raising the stakes in the industry.
Industry experts note that Microsoft’s move represents a pivotal moment in personal computing.
