Germany’s Axel Springer has completed its acquisition of Telegraph Media Group, concluding one of the most significant media transactions of 2026 after receiving regulatory clearance in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Austria.
The acquisition, valued at approximately £575 million, marks Axel Springer’s second-largest investment since its founding in 1946, surpassed only by its roughly $1 billion purchase of US political news outlet Politico in 2021. The deal also fulfils a long-standing ambition after the company made an unsuccessful bid for The Telegraph in 2004.
Axel Springer said the acquisition will support the Telegraph Media Group’s long-term growth by preserving its editorial independence while accelerating digital transformation, expanding subscription-based products, strengthening artificial intelligence capabilities and increasing its international reach, particularly in the United States.
The transaction reinforces Axel Springer’s strategy of expanding its portfolio of premium news brands as global media companies continue to invest in digital journalism, subscription revenues and AI-driven publishing technologies.
