TOKYO — Egypt has marked a strategic milestone in its digital economy expansion with its first-ever national startup pavilion at SusHi Tech Tokyo 2026, as the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) spearheaded an official delegation to the global innovation event, held from April 27 to 29. According to official event materials, reviewed by The Middle East Observer, the participation reflects Egypt’s growing ambition to embed its technology ecosystem within global innovation markets.

The participation, organised in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), forms part of a broader strategic push to position Egyptian startups within high-value Asian markets—particularly Japan. As outlined in official statements cited by The Middle East Observer, the initiative falls under Project NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan), which is designed to accelerate startup internationalisation through access to global networks and investment pipelines.

The Egyptian pavilion, featuring 10 technology startups, drew high-level diplomatic attention during the event, including visits from Egypt’s Ambassador to Japan and Tokyo’s Governor—signalling the importance of the platform as a conduit for economic and technological cooperation.

From a policy standpoint, The Middle East Observer notes that ITIDA’s move reflects a calibrated shift towards export-oriented digital services and innovation-led growth. In an official statement, ITIDA Chief Executive Ahmed Elzaher underscored that the Tokyo presence represents a gateway for Egyptian startups to engage directly with global investors and strategic partners, while reinforcing Egypt’s positioning as a competitive hub for technology exports.

The participating startups represent a diversified cross-section of high-growth sectors—including fintech, healthtech, logistics, cybersecurity, cleantech, and AI-driven manufacturing—highlighting the breadth of Egypt’s innovation pipeline. Their engagement in business-to-business meetings and investment sessions is expected to support long-term partnerships with Japanese and international venture capital firms and financial institutions.

On the sidelines of the event, a report released by Startup Genome in collaboration with ITIDA and JICA offered further insight into Egypt’s evolving startup ecosystem. As highlighted in the report and reviewed by The Middle East Observer, Egypt now hosts more than 1,500 active startups, with over $2.1 billion in venture capital funding raised between 2020 and 2025, alongside total exit values reaching $7.4 billion—figures that underscore increasing ecosystem maturity and investor confidence.

The report also points to Egypt’s growing capabilities in advanced technology sectors, including fintech, semiconductor innovation, and Arabic-language artificial intelligence, supported by a large and cost-efficient STEM talent base. This trajectory, The Middle East Observer analysis suggests, positions Egypt as both a domestic innovation centre and a regional gateway for expansion into Gulf and African markets.

SusHi Tech Tokyo—one of Asia’s leading platforms for sustainable urban innovation—brought together approximately 700 startups alongside global corporations, policymakers, and investors in its 2026 edition. Within this context, Egypt’s debut pavilion represents a strategic step toward integrating its startup ecosystem into global value chains, leveraging international partnerships to scale its digital economy.

The Middle East Observer concludes that ITIDA’s participation signals a structured advancement in Egypt’s innovation diplomacy—anchoring the country’s ambitions to emerge as a regional hub for technology, digital services, and AI-driven growth.
