Egypt Launches AU Security Presidency With Focus on Sudan, Somalia

Must read

Egypt has assumed the rotating February presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council, placing the crisis in Sudan and Somalia at the top of its agenda.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt said Cairo’s programme responds to escalating conflicts, fragile political transitions, food insecurity and climate stress, and will be guided by the AU Constitutive Act. Egypt’s approach emphasises respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the protection of national institutions, alongside collective African engagement.

Sudan and Somalia will dominate council deliberations, with Egypt planning informal ministerial consultations with Sudan’s foreign minister and separate ministerial sessions on both crises, covering political, security and humanitarian tracks. The stated aim is to advance African-led solutions that prioritise ceasefires, state cohesion and civilian protection.

Beyond crisis response, Egypt will link peace and security to governance and development in line with Agenda 2063, steering discussions on post-conflict reconstruction and development—a portfolio it currently leads. The month’s agenda also includes thematic sessions on climate-security risks, artificial intelligence and stalled political transitions.

Egypt’s delegation is expected to present the PSC’s annual activity report to the upcoming AU summit and conduct field visits and partner consultations to improve coordination. Cairo has framed its presidency as pragmatic and principle-driven, balancing urgent conflict management with longer-term stability across the continent.
