Cairo University Enters Top 10% Globally in SCImago 2026 Ranking

Cairo — Cairo University has secured a place among the top 10% of research institutions worldwide in the 2026 edition of the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), according to official statements issued by the university’s administration.

University President Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek announced that the institution ranked 997th globally out of more than 10,000 institutions, while achieving Q1 classification, reflecting strong performance across research, innovation, and societal impact indicators. The results also confirmed Cairo University’s continued leadership at both the national and African levels, maintaining its position as Egypt’s top-ranked university for the third consecutive year (2024–2026) and advancing to first place in Africa in 2026, up from second position in the previous two years.

The ranking highlighted the university’s notable strength in research output, where it placed 538th globally in research performance, leading both locally and across Africa. Officials attributed this to a sustained increase in international scientific publications and contributions to high-impact journals. In parallel, Cairo University demonstrated improved societal impact, ranking 676th globally and sixth in Africa, while retaining its top domestic position.

At the disciplinary level, the university recorded strong global standings, ranking 47th in dentistry, 39th in veterinary medicine, and 178th in pharmacy, with all three fields leading at both national and continental levels. It also posted a significant improvement in agricultural and biological sciences, advancing from 765th globally in 2024 to 437th in 2026, underscoring accelerated progress in specialized research areas.

The SCImago ranking, which evaluates institutions based on research performance, innovation output, and societal impact, is widely regarded as a key international benchmark. Cairo University’s latest results reinforce its growing competitiveness and expanding role within the global academic and research landscape.
