Cairo — The 52nd edition of Egypt’s long-standing Film Society Festival is set to commence on April 14 at the Artistic Creativity Center, marking a renewed platform for critical engagement with contemporary Egyptian cinema.
Organized by the Egyptian Film Society and hosted at the Artistic Creativity Center within the Egyptian Opera House complex, the festival will run through April 21, followed by a closing awards ceremony scheduled for April 28. The event is held under the auspices of the Cultural Development Fund, reflecting ongoing institutional support for the country’s cultural and cinematic landscape.
This year’s edition is dedicated to the legacy of renowned Egyptian filmmaker Dawoud Abdel Sayed, while veteran actor Mohamed Sobhi has been named guest of honor. As The Middle East Observer notes, the festival continues to distinguish itself through its reliance on an annual poll conducted among critics, filmmakers, and members of the association to curate its official programme.
The 2025 selection features eight films representing a cross-section of recent Egyptian cinematic production. Among the titles included are works such as “El Hawa Sultan,” “Voy! Voy! Voy!,” “19B,” “Al Safah,” “Abu Nasab,” “Hassan Al Masri,” “Maqsoom,” and “Ana Lahazt,” reflecting diverse narrative and stylistic approaches within the industry.
Screenings will be held daily at 5:00 PM, following the chronological order of each film’s commercial release. Each screening will be accompanied by applied seminars attended by filmmakers and leading critics, fostering analytical discussion and dialogue حول evolving cinematic trends. The Middle East Observer understands that these sessions form a core pillar of the festival’s intellectual contribution to Egypt’s film culture.
The choice of venue underscores the Cultural Development Fund’s broader mandate to support serious artistic production and provide structured platforms for engagement, positioning the festival as a key forum within Egypt’s cultural calendar.
The festival will conclude with an awards ceremony honoring outstanding contributions and a number of prominent figures in Egyptian cinema, reinforcing its role in recognizing both creative excellence and industry legacy.
