SOKHNA — Egypt has accelerated its industrial expansion with investments reaching $6.5 billion in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), as Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly inaugurated nine new projects in Sokhna, including a strategic pharmaceutical expansion aimed at boosting local production and exports.
The newly launched projects span a range of industrial sectors, many targeting import substitution and the strengthening of Egypt’s manufacturing base. The expansion brings the total number of operational factories in SCZONE to 204, with a further 173 under development, reinforcing the zone’s position as a key industrial hub.
A central highlight of the tour was the expansion of Ateco Pharma Egypt’s intravenous (IV) solutions facility. The second phase, supported by an additional $10 million investment, raises total project value to $60 million and increases production capacity to 50 million bottles annually. Located within the Orascom Industrial Parks area, the facility utilizes advanced Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) technology and operates in compliance with Egyptian Drug Authority standards.
The expansion creates 100 additional jobs, bringing total employment at the plant to around 600, while supporting exports to more than 13 Arab and African markets, in addition to Latin America. Officials said the project is aimed at reducing reliance on imported medical supplies while strengthening Egypt’s role as a regional pharmaceutical exporter.
Madbouly reiterated that industry remains a primary driver of economic growth, highlighting ongoing reforms to improve the investment climate, including administrative, tax, and customs facilitation measures. He added that SCZONE continues to attract investors from more than 28 countries, reflecting sustained international confidence in Egypt’s industrial strategy despite global and regional challenges.
The latest wave of projects underscores Egypt’s push to localize strategic industries, expand private sector participation, and position Sokhna as a leading regional manufacturing and export platform.
