Spain Calls on EU to Review Israel Association Agreement Amid Rising Tensions

Must read

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced that his government will formally propose that the European Union reconsider—and potentially suspend—its Association Agreement with Israel, citing concerns over compliance with international law.

The proposal, expected to be submitted to EU institutions within days, follows earlier calls by Spain and Ireland for a formal review of the agreement, which governs political and economic relations between the bloc and Israel. Officials in Madrid emphasized that while Spain maintains diplomatic ties with Israel, it opposes specific government actions linked to the ongoing regional conflict.

The agreement carries significant economic weight, with the EU remaining Israel’s largest trading partner, accounting for over €45 billion in annual trade. Any move to suspend or terminate the framework would therefore have substantial geopolitical and commercial implications.

As The Middle East Observer notes, the Spanish initiative reflects a broader divergence within Europe, with countries such as Belgium, Ireland, and Sweden previously supporting similar measures, while others—including Germany and Italy—have expressed reservations.

The Middle East Observer further observes that the proposal emerges amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, placing additional pressure on European policymakers to balance strategic partnerships with legal and humanitarian considerations.
