Chongqing, China — Authorities in Chongqing have launched what local officials describe as one of the world’s longest outdoor escalator systems, further reinforcing the city’s reputation for complex, terrain-adapted infrastructure.
The project, known as the Wushan Goddess Escalator, connects upper and lower sections of Shenwei Street in Wushan County’s Gaotang area. The system comprises 21 escalators, eight elevators, four moving walkways, two pedestrian bridges, and two overpasses, spanning approximately 905 meters with a vertical elevation difference of about 242 meters.
Designed to address the challenges of the city’s mountainous landscape, the network reduces travel time between the two levels from nearly one hour to around 20 minutes, according to local authorities.
The escalator system entered a paid trial operation on February 17, with a single ride priced at 3 yuan (approximately $0.40). Officials are expected to review the fare structure following the trial period.
Chongqing, known for its multi-level urban design and transport innovations, continues to expand infrastructure solutions aimed at improving mobility, accessibility, and urban efficiency across its steep terrain.
