Wind Energy: Egypt Plans EGP 12bn Grid Link for Suez Projects

Must read

CAIRO Egypt is preparing to launch an international tender for a major electricity transmission project to connect wind energy developments in the Gulf of Suez to the national grid, with expected investments of around EGP 12 billion, according to a government official cited by Asharq Business.

The proposed transmission line will extend approximately 390 kilometres with a capacity of 500 kilovolts, making it one of the largest in the country. The project aims to connect renewable developments led by Scatec and Orascom Construction to the national grid.

According to the official, the project is expected to be implemented within about a year, with operations targeted by mid-2027, supporting efforts to expand grid capacity and absorb rising volumes of renewable energy.

The development comes as Egypt accelerates its clean energy strategy, with renewable capacity rising by 26% in FY 2024–2025 to 8.6 gigawatts, up from 6.8 gigawatts a year earlier. The government aims to increase renewables’ share to 45% of the energy mix by 2035.

As The Middle East Observer notes, expanding transmission infrastructure is becoming critical to overcoming grid constraints and enabling large-scale integration of renewable energy.

The project also supports Egypt’s ambition to position itself as a regional energy hub, with ongoing interconnection projects including a 3,000-megawatt link with Saudi Arabia and planned electricity exports to Europe via Greece and Cyprus.

As The Middle East Observer highlights, the combination of renewable expansion and grid modernisation underscores a strategic shift toward accelerating the integration of clean energy, strengthening export-focused infrastructure, and advancing regional integration..
