Indorama Expands into Egypt’s Fertilizer Sector with $525mn Ain Sokhna Complex

CAIRO — Global industrial group Indorama Corporation has formally entered Egypt’s fertilizer sector following the signing of a major agreement with the Suez Canal Economic Zone Authority to establish an integrated phosphate fertilizer and chemicals complex in Ain Sokhna.

According to an official statement published via Egypt’s government platform and reviewed by The Middle East Observer, the project will be developed in partnership with Misr Phosphate, marking a strategic shift in Indorama’s local operations beyond its long-standing focus on plastics and packaging since 2007.

The first phase of the project entails an investment of $525 million across a 52.2-hectare site, with planned annual production capacity reaching 600,000 tonnes of phosphate fertilizers. The facility will also produce key industrial inputs—including ammonia, sulfur, urea, and potash—alongside specialty chemicals such as zinc sulfate and boric acid.

The development is structured with a strong export orientation, with approximately 80% of output targeted at international markets, positioning the project as a contributor to Egypt’s export diversification strategy.

As The Middle East Observer notes, the move comes amid a structural imbalance in Egypt’s fertilizer export mix. While total fertilizer exports reached $2.18 billion in 2024, phosphate-based products accounted for just 13%, compared to 71% for nitrogen fertilizers, highlighting significant upside potential in the phosphate segment.

Regionally, the investment aligns with Indorama’s broader African expansion strategy. The group has previously established fertilizer operations in Senegal and Nigeria, with ongoing capacity expansions across both markets, signaling a long-term commitment to scaling production across the continent.

While timelines for construction and commissioning remain undisclosed, the Ain Sokhna complex is expected to enhance Egypt’s positioning within global fertilizer supply chains and strengthen its industrial export base.
