Iraq is set to embark on an ambitious infrastructure journey with the launch of the Development Road project, a $17 billion initiative aimed at constructing a 1,200-kilometer rail line and an adjoining roadway stretching from the country’s southern region to its northern border with Turkey. This major project is expected to transform Iraq’s transportation landscape, enhancing trade connectivity across the region.
The Iraqi Transport Ministry has already made significant progress, with approximately 64% of the rail designs and 60% of the motorway plans completed, as reported by Maytham Safi, a spokesperson for the Ministry. The remaining designs are anticipated to be finalized by 2025, paving the way for international bidding from global companies later this year. Iraq is actively seeking partnerships with countries such as the UAE, Qatar, and Turkey to bring this project to fruition.
Safi told the official Iraqi News Agency, “This year will see the completion of the designs for this project…we will then offer it to international firms.” With construction slated to commence following the final design phase, the Development Road project represents a significant opportunity for foreign investment and collaboration in Iraq’s infrastructure sector.
The Development Road is not just a transport project; it includes plans for industrial zones along the motorway and the establishment of the region’s largest industrial city near the Southern Faw Port. This strategic location is expected to bolster Iraq’s economic growth by facilitating trade and attracting industries, thereby creating countless job opportunities.
According to the World Bank, infrastructure development is a key driver of economic growth, with transport infrastructure alone contributing to improvements in trade efficiency and economic performance. The Development Road project is expected to align with these outcomes, enhancing Iraq’s regional trade competitiveness.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Hakim, a transport infrastructure expert at the University of Baghdad, commented on the project’s potential, “The Development Road is set to become a vital trade corridor, not only for Iraq but for the entire region. By connecting the Gulf with Europe via Turkey, it will serve as a new Silk Road, reviving ancient trade routes and fostering economic integration.”
In an exclusive update, sources within the Iraqi government have revealed that financial backing discussions are underway with several international consortia, which could expedite the project’s timeline by securing necessary funding and technical expertise.
