Qatar Energy has begun initial LNG production at its Golden Pass terminal in Texas, marking a pivotal moment for global gas markets as supply disruptions in the Gulf expose vulnerabilities in concentrated export systems. The $10 billion facility, developed with ExxonMobil, is expected to ramp up toward 18 million tonnes per year, with first cargoes anticipated in the coming months.
The startup coincides with significant operational losses at Ras Laffan Industrial City following recent attacks that disrupted around 17% of Qatar’s LNG capacity and triggered force majeure on some contracts. The incident has tightened global supply, particularly across Europe and Asia, underscoring the strategic importance of diversified production bases.
Golden Pass, though long planned, now provides Qatar with a critical offshore supply channel, enabling continued delivery commitments from the U.S. Gulf Coast. The development reinforces a broader shift in global LNG dynamics, where American export capacity is increasingly acting as a stabilising force amid geopolitical volatility in traditional energy corridors.
