Nasr Automotive and FAW Forge Partnership to Rebuild Egypt’s Car Industry

Must read

Cairo — Egypt’s state-owned Nasr Automotive has signed a strategic partnership with China’s FAW Group to manufacture a range of vehicles under the revived “Nasr” brand, marking a significant step in Cairo’s efforts to rebuild its automotive industry, deepen industrial localisation and expand domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital and brings together one of China’s largest vehicle manufacturers with Egypt’s historic national carmaker.

Founded in 1960, Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company was once the flagship of Egypt’s automotive industry and a symbol of the country’s industrial ambitions before production largely ceased in the late 2000s. The latest partnership forms part of broader government efforts to revive the company and restore domestic vehicle manufacturing capacity.

Officials said the agreement aims to facilitate technology transfer, increase local-content ratios and support the development of a competitive automotive manufacturing base capable of serving both domestic and regional markets. The initiative aligns with Egypt’s wider strategy of attracting international manufacturers, reducing reliance on imported vehicles and building an export-oriented automotive sector integrated into regional and global value chains.

FAW, one of China’s largest automotive groups, manufactures passenger vehicles, commercial trucks and industrial transport solutions, with operations spanning domestic and international markets. Its manufacturing expertise and supply-chain capabilities are expected to support Nasr Automotive’s plans to introduce vehicles built to international standards while exploring export opportunities across Africa and the Middle East.

The partnership underscores Egypt’s strategy of leveraging international industrial alliances to rebuild domestic manufacturing capacity, deepen localisation and strengthen supplier ecosystems. Beyond vehicle assembly, policymakers view such projects as catalysts for developing components manufacturing, engineering services and industrial employment, reinforcing Egypt’s ambition to position itself as a regional automotive production and export hub linking Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
