Egypt Opens First Monorail Line Linking Cairo to New Administrative Capital

Must read

CAIRO — Egypt officially launched the first operational phase of its long-awaited monorail project on Tuesday, introducing a new electric mass-transit line linking eastern Cairo with the country’s New Administrative Capital as part of a broader infrastructure modernization strategy.

The newly opened route includes 16 operational passenger stations and began daily service between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., according to official statements and reports by Bloomberg.

The monorail forms part of a wider $4.5 billion transport project designed to connect Greater Cairo with surrounding urban developments and reduce pressure on Egypt’s congested road network.

The system was developed by a consortium including Alstom, Arab Contractors, and Orascom Construction, following nearly seven years of construction and infrastructure works.

Officials said the project aims to provide a faster and more energy-efficient public transportation alternative amid rising fuel costs and growing urban expansion across the Cairo metropolitan area.

The eastern monorail route stretches approximately 56 kilometers between the New Administrative Capital and Cairo Stadium area, while a second western route—still under development—will eventually connect western Cairo with 6th of October City near the Giza pyramids.

Once fully completed, Egypt’s monorail network will extend roughly 83 miles (133 kilometers), making it one of the region’s largest modern urban transit systems.

The launch also strengthens connectivity with the New Administrative Capital, a multibillion-dollar urban megaproject that has become a central pillar of Egypt’s long-term economic and administrative restructuring plans under Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Egyptian authorities have repeatedly defended large-scale infrastructure spending, arguing that modern transportation systems are essential for attracting foreign investment, supporting exports, reducing fuel consumption, and improving economic productivity.

The monorail launch comes alongside several parallel transport projects currently underway, including expansions of the Cairo Metro, rapid bus systems, and a massive high-speed electric railway network being developed through a $23 billion agreement involving Siemens Mobility, Arab Contractors, and Orascom Construction.

As The Middle East Observer notes, the monorail project reflects Egypt’s broader strategy of using large-scale transportation infrastructure not only to address urban congestion, but also to reshape economic geography, connect emerging urban centers, and reinforce Cairo’s transition toward a more integrated and modernized metropolitan transport network.
