Egypt Studies Abu Dhabi Ports Proposal to Lease Red Sea Oil Storage Facilities

Must read

Cairo — Egypt is currently evaluating a proposal from Abu Dhabi Ports to lease oil storage facilities along the Red Sea, in a move that underscores the region’s growing importance as an alternative corridor for global energy flows amid ongoing geopolitical disruptions.

According to a government official cited by Asharq Bloomberg, negotiations are underway to reach a final agreement before the end of the second quarter of 2026. Discussions are focusing on defining the number and locations of storage facilities, as well as lease structures, which may be arranged on either a monthly or annual basis.

As The Middle East Observer notes, the talks come against the backdrop of continued disruption to maritime navigation via the Strait of Hormuz, where escalating tensions have impacted the flow of crude oil and petroleum products through one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

Egypt currently maintains an estimated surplus storage capacity of approximately 29 million barrels across its major ports, enhancing its attractiveness as a destination for global oil traders and storage operators. In recent months, Cairo has already offered a number of storage units for lease at Red Sea ports, including Ain Sokhna and Ras Badran, as part of a broader strategy to optimize its logistical assets.

Regional energy dynamics have further elevated the Red Sea’s role, with companies such as Saudi Aramco reportedly redirecting shipments toward alternative terminals, including Yanbu, to maintain supply continuity amid Gulf shipping constraints.

The Middle East Observer understands that Egypt is actively positioning itself as a regional hub for energy storage and trading, supported by a network of 19 commercial ports—14 of which are currently undergoing development—and approximately 79 petroleum storage facilities that have been constructed or upgraded in recent years.

In parallel, the government continues to expand its strategic partnerships with international energy players, including previous cooperation frameworks with Fujairah-based entities in oil storage development projects, reinforcing Egypt’s long-term ambition to serve as a key logistical node in global energy supply chains.
