Egypt’s 9 PM Curfew Delivers Millions in Fuel Savings Within Days

Must read

Egypt’s decision to enforce a 9 PM closing time for shops has yielded immediate economic gains, with government estimates indicating fuel savings of between LE33 million and LE40 million per day. Within the first two days of implementation, total savings ranged from LE66 million to LE80 million, with projections suggesting the figure could reach approximately LE120 million when aligned with global energy pricing benchmarks.

Officials expect the policy to generate substantial monthly savings throughout April, estimated at between LE990 million and LE1.2 billion based on local fuel prices, and potentially rising to nearly LE1.8 billion when calculated against international cost levels. The measures are seen as delivering both fiscal relief and environmental benefits through reduced energy consumption.

In parallel, government ministries have begun applying a remote work policy on Sundays during April, following a directive from the Prime Minister. While essential personnel remain on-site, the shift marks a broader push toward energy efficiency across public sector operations.

However, the transition has coincided with a noticeable rise in household internet usage. Families report increased reliance on home connectivity, particularly for work involving large data transfers. Current pricing indicates that basic monthly internet packages start at around LE240 for 140 GB, while higher-usage households consuming between 400 and 600 GB face monthly costs exceeding LE650.
