Blu EV, an Egyptian electric mobility company led by billionaire Naguib Sawiris, is gearing up to launch its operations in Morocco by the end of the year. With a robust investment of $100 million, the company aims to electrify Morocco’s streets with eco-friendly, electric motorcycles, marking its first foray into international markets.
Founded in 2023 and chaired by Sawiris, Blu EV specializes in converting traditional fuel-powered motorcycles into electric vehicles. The company has already made significant inroads across several Egyptian cities, including East Cairo, Alexandria, and El Gouna. With over 50 battery-swapping stations established, Blu EV is set to expand further into Greater Cairo and beyond, with plans to cover the entirety of Egypt over the next five years.
CEO and co-founder Reda Baalbaki emphasizes that this expansion into Morocco is a strategic step in Blu EV’s vision to gradually penetrate the MENA region. “Our goal is to provide affordable and sustainable transportation solutions, starting with motorcycles—vehicles that are pivotal to daily commutes in bustling cities,” Baalbaki explained.
Morocco, known for its burgeoning automotive industry, hosts major players like Renault Tangier, which recently celebrated a milestone with the production of its 2,000th fully electric vehicle. Despite this, local usage of electric vehicles remains limited, primarily due to the high costs associated with electric cars and a scarcity of charging infrastructure.
This presents a significant opportunity for Blu EV, as the focus on electric motorcycles could bridge a critical gap in the market. Cities such as Casablanca, Marrakech, and Fez, where motorcycles are a common mode of transport, stand to benefit from Blu EV’s innovative solutions.
Industry experts, including sustainability advocate Leila Hamdani from the Green Energy Council, highlight the potential impact of Blu EV’s entry into Morocco. “The introduction of affordable electric motorcycles could be a game-changer for urban mobility in Morocco. It aligns with global trends toward sustainable transport and can significantly reduce urban pollution levels,” Hamdani noted.
