BEIJING – China is placing humanoid robotics at the center of its Lunar New Year celebrations, using the nationally televised CCTV Spring Festival Gala as a stage to spotlight the country’s rapidly advancing artificial intelligence and robotics sector.
Several emerging robotics firms, including Unitree Robotics, Galbot, Noetix, and MagicLab, are expected to present their humanoid machines during the annual broadcast — one of the most-watched television events in the world.
The gala, traditionally viewed by hundreds of millions of people, has increasingly become a platform for demonstrating Beijing’s technological ambitions. Last year’s performance featuring 16 humanoid robots dancing in synchrony drew widespread attention and underscored the government’s emphasis on robotics as a pillar of next-generation manufacturing.
China’s leadership has elevated robotics and artificial intelligence within its broader industrial modernization strategy, seeking to offset demographic pressures from an aging workforce while boosting productivity through automation.
According to industry estimates, China accounted for the vast majority of global humanoid robot shipments last year, significantly outpacing competitors. Analysts project that domestic sales could more than double this year as production scales and AI capabilities improve.
Companies such as AgiBot and Unitree are reportedly preparing for public listings, reflecting growing investor interest in the sector. Meanwhile, global competitors, including Tesla with its Optimus humanoid program, are racing to advance their own robotics ambitions.
While the gala performances capture public imagination with acrobatics and choreographed routines, industry observers note that the real technological benchmark lies in precision tasks such as fine object manipulation, multi-robot coordination, and autonomous recovery from errors.
Several firms have already begun limited commercial deployments. For example, humanoid robots are being tested in logistics, factory environments, and industrial support roles, often in collaboration with major manufacturers such as CATL.
As China continues to integrate artificial intelligence with advanced hardware manufacturing, the Spring Festival Gala serves as more than entertainment — it has become a high-visibility showcase of the country’s ambitions to lead in the global robotics race.
