Demsky recalls the challenges she faced in the classroom, saying, “I couldn’t hear my students,” which prompted her to seek hearing aids. However, she expressed some reservations about the AirPods’ functionality, particularly the battery life. “As soon as I heard about the six-hour battery life, I thought, ‘That’s not for me.’ I need something that lasts all day,” she noted.
Britney Ometz, an audiologist and owner of Anne Arundel Audiology, is optimistic about the update’s potential benefits. “Many people already have access to Apple products, so this development increases accessibility,” she explained. The familiar design of AirPods might also help reduce the stigma often associated with wearing hearing aids.
Nonetheless, Ometz acknowledges the limitations, emphasizing that the six-hour battery life may not suit those needing hearing assistance throughout the day. She suggests that the AirPods can be particularly beneficial in scenarios where only minor hearing assistance is required, such as during meetings or in large gatherings.
Despite its innovative nature, experts caution that this update does not replace the need for professional audiological consultations. Hearing loss may sometimes be linked to other health concerns, such as earwax build-up, necessitating a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional.
One of the standout features of the update is the ability for users to upload an audiology test directly to their device, enabling AirPods to adjust their sound settings to meet individual hearing needs. Additionally, the AirPods can conduct a hearing test to detect frequencies the user may struggle to hear.
