Egyptian sabre fencer Youssef Shamel confirmed his rise on the international stage after securing the bronze medal in the Under-20 Junior Individual event at the Junior Sabre Fencing World Cup, staged at Cairo International Stadium.
Shamel delivered a composed and tactically mature performance throughout the tournament, recording five victories in the group stage before advancing confidently through the knockout rounds. Competing in a highly competitive pool featuring fencers from France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Belgium and the United States, he emerged as one of the event’s standout performers.
The bronze medal — shared with Hungary’s Bence Balazs — marked Egypt’s first podium finish of the tournament, while France’s Odinn Bindas claimed gold and American James Sennewald took silver.
The Cairo event brought together more than 500 male and female fencers from 54 countries, reinforcing its status as a major fixture on the global junior fencing calendar. Officials from the International Fencing Federation praised Egypt’s organisation and technical standards, while the Egyptian Fencing Federation described Shamel’s achievement as a milestone for the country’s junior development programme.
