Al Ahly Sporting Club secured a landmark victory on Sunday, winning the 2025 Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) championship after a commanding 75–56 win over Ferroviário de Maputo in the final played in Cairo.
The hosts dominated from the opening tip, racing to a 29–17 lead in the first quarter and steadily extending their advantage through disciplined defence and sharp offensive execution. By halftime, Al Ahly were firmly in control with a 19-point lead, leaving the Mozambican side struggling to find momentum.
Ferroviário attempted to claw their way back late in the third quarter, briefly narrowing the gap to 57–47, but Al Ahly responded emphatically. A decisive 20–4 run in the final period extinguished any hopes of a comeback and sealed a historic triumph in front of the home crowd.
Raneem Elgedawy delivered a performance to remember, posting 29 points and 18 rebounds on efficient shooting to earn the Most Valuable Player award. Nadine Mohamed also played a pivotal role, registering a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The victory carried special significance for Al Ahly, who had previously fallen short in the WBLA finals of 2019 and 2024, both times against Ferroviário de Maputo. The 2025 success marked a long-awaited breakthrough over their continental rivals.
The title also capped a historic night for head coach Tarek Abouzied, who became the first coach to win African club championships in both men’s and women’s basketball. His latest achievement came nine years after leading Al Ahly’s men’s team to continental glory, also on home soil.
Organised by FIBA Africa, the WBLA brings together the continent’s top women’s clubs in a group-stage and knockout format. With this win, Al Ahly became the second Egyptian club to lift the trophy, following Alexandria Sporting, champions in 2022 and 2023.
