In a significant diplomatic move, Egypt has taken over the presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) in the month of October 2024 for a 2 year term. This development was announced by H.E. Mohamed Gad, Egypt’s ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative to the African Union.

During its presidency, which began on October 1, 2024, Egypt will focus on strengthening the PSC as a vital body dedicated to maintaining peace, security, and stability across the African continent. Ambassador Gad emphasized that Egypt’s presidency will address security and development challenges in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions a peaceful and prosperous Africa driven by its own citizens.

“Egypt’s upcoming presidency comes within a complex regional and international context marked by growing security challenges, requiring concerted efforts and transparent consultation,” stated Gad. “We aim to establish stability and security in the African continent and achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.”

Egypt’s Track Record and Commitment

Egypt’s active role in mediating disputes and fostering peace within the African continent has garnered appreciation and trust from North African and other African countries. Notable successes include support in stabilizing Libya, as well as extensive counter-terrorism initiatives.

The unanimous election of Egypt to a two-year seat on the PSC during the African Union Executive Council meetings in February 2024 underscores the confidence in Egypt’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in Africa.

As Egypt leads the PSC this October, the African Union and its member states are poised for a month of proactive and strategic efforts, guided by Egypt’s vision and dedication to a more secure, stable, and prosperous Africa.
