The European Union has offered two grants to Egypt worth €62m to support development projects. The first includes funding a project to improve sanitation services in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate worth €32m, which aims to improve the sanitation system in the province through supporting the establishment of effective infrastructure -providing sanitation services for nearly half a million citizens.
Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Dr Sahar Nasr, said the second grant is an agreement to fund a programme for providing educational opportunities and the protection of children at risk. The European Union’s contribution to funding the project amounts to €30m along with €6.15m from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which will implement the programme in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the National Council for Motherhood and Childhood.
The signing of development agreements between Egypt and the European Union was attended by Dr Nasr, Dr Moustafa Madbouli, the Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, and Head of the EU mission in Cairo, James Moran, as well as the UNICEF representatives.
Nasr asserted at signing the ceremony, the Ministry of International Cooperation is enthusiastic to make best use out of available financial resources from development partners to serve the priorities of the Egyptian government.
