New Giza Project to Convert Waste into Biofuels and Fertilizers

Must read

Egypt has signed a major agreement with Polar Hydro to develop and operate a large-scale solid waste management and treatment project in Giza, marking a significant step in the country’s green transition and circular-economy drive.

The project will be anchored by a 714-acre integrated facility designed to handle waste from Giza’s districts and villages, with daily treatment capacity expected to reach at least 5,000 tonnes. According to the Ministry of Environment, the plant will process up to 30 million tonnes of accumulated waste and convert it into value-added export products, including biofuels, fertilizers and industrial graphite.

Under the agreement, Polar Hydro will also rehabilitate and operate waste disposal and landfill sites in Shubramant as a special economic zone, while developing operational plans for the Kerdasa and Mariouteya intermediate waste transfer stations. The initiative forms part of Egypt’s new integrated solid waste management system, focused on recycling and resource recovery prior to safe disposal.

Officials said the project will strengthen environmental sustainability while creating a new economic resource for the country, generating an estimated 52,000 direct and indirect jobs. The agreement aligns with Egypt’s broader Economic Development Narrative, which prioritises green projects, private-sector partnerships, industrial expansion and increased foreign investment.

The USD 4.2 billion project builds on Polar Hydro’s previously announced plan to invest USD 2.4 billion in a large-scale recycling facility within the Giza Free Zone, reinforcing Egypt’s ambitions to position waste-to-value industries as a pillar of sustainable growth.
