In an unforgettable night of squash at the IQUW Bermuda Squash Open, 17-year-old Mohamad Zakaria emerged victorious over seasoned champion Miguel Angel Rodriguez in a nail-biting final that showcased the remarkable prowess of youth over experience. Zakaria, the No. 2 seed, delivered a thrilling performance against 39-year-old Rodriguez, clinching the title with a 3-2 victory in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats for over an hour.

The young Egyptian, who has been climbing the ranks rapidly, said to The Royal Gazette, stating, “I really wanted to win this tournament to help my ranking a lot and I am very, very proud. It feels amazing that all the work that I put in paid off.”

The match was a rollercoaster of emotions and skill, with Rodriguez initially taking the lead with an 11-8 win in the first game. However, Zakaria responded with vigor, dominating the second game 11-7. Despite Rodriguez regaining control with an 11-6 win in the third, Zakaria’s resilience shone through in a pivotal fourth game. Demonstrating immense mental fortitude, he saved five championship points, winning 15-13 to force a decisive fifth game.

Zakaria seized the momentum in the final game, conquering Rodriguez 11-4, as the veteran player struggled with fatigue and frustration from contested calls. “I knew it was going to be hard because he is a seasoned player and I am very happy to come through,” said Zakaria. “I wanted to be attacking and not being on the passive side; to really let my arm go and let my squash do the talking.”
