Egypt’s U-20 national team launched their CAF Africa Cup of Nations campaign on a positive note, edging South Africa 1-0 in a tense Group A encounter on Sunday.

In front of a lively crowd, substitute Mohamed Abdalla emerged as the match-winner, smashing a superb left-footed strike into the bottom right corner just past the hour mark. The decisive goal came after a swift counterattack orchestrated by Mohamed Raafat, showcasing Egypt’s clinical edge despite a challenging start.

South Africa came out aggressively, dominating early possession and pressing high, but struggled to convert their momentum into meaningful threats on goal. Egypt, under the guidance of coach Osama Nabih, endured a rocky first half, compounded by injuries that forced two early substitutions. Abdalla replaced Omar Hassan in the 36th minute, while Seif Eldin Essam came in for Moemen Sherif shortly after.

After the break, the Young Pharaohs grew in composure and control. Abdalla’s strike turned the tide, and despite South Africa’s attempts to rally, Egypt’s defense held firm to secure the three crucial points.

Looking ahead, Egypt will next face Sierra Leone on Wednesday, while South Africa must regroup before taking on Tanzania in their second group match.

Earlier in the day, Zambia and Sierra Leone played out a goalless draw, leaving the group standings finely balanced after the opening round.

This year’s U-20 Africa Cup has extra significance: not only will the top two teams from each group and the best two third-placed sides advance to the quarter-finals, but the four semi-finalists will also book tickets to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, set to be hosted in Chile this September.

Originally scheduled for Côte d’Ivoire, the tournament was relocated to Egypt following the withdrawal of the initial hosts last March due to unforeseen challenges. Now, the Young Pharaohs are determined to make the most of home soil advantage as they chase continental glory and a coveted World Cup berth.
