Saudi Arabian driver Dania Akeel clinched the overall title of the FIA Middle East Baja Cup, marking her as the first female driver to achieve such a victory in the region’s motorsport history. Competing against seasoned drivers across four challenging rounds, Akeel’s triumph in the Dubai International Baja was a testament to her skill, resilience, and strategic prowess.
Akeel navigated the diverse terrains of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and Dubai with remarkable consistency, earning podium finishes at each event. Her journey through the prestigious Baja series was not only challenging but also a showcase of adaptability. Akeel competed with two different co-drivers and leveraged the expertise of three car preparation companies to optimize her performance across the series.
Her campaign began with impressive performances in an Overdrive Racing Toyota Hilux, leading the Qatar event after the first day. Transitioning into the SSV category for the final rounds, she piloted a Santag Racing Can-Am Maverick XRS Turbo RR to a commendable finish in Jordan before seizing victory with the South Racing Can-Am Team in Dubai.
Reflecting on the season, Akeel remarked, “The FIA Middle East Baja Cup developed into a very exciting season. Initially, I did not plan to do the whole championship.” Her strategic approach was evident as she targeted the Ultimate category and meticulously calculated her moves to close the points gap with competitors. By aligning her efforts in the SSV class, Akeel effectively maneuvered into the lead, highlighting her tactical thinking and competitive spirit.
Akeel attributed her success to the unwavering support of her co-drivers, Stephane Duple and Sebastien Delaunay, and the collaborative efforts of teams like Overdrive, South Racing, and SRT Racing. Additionally, she expressed gratitude towards her sponsors, including Jameel Motorsport, Tamer Group, Hertz Saudi Arabia, Toyota Motor Oil, BFGoodrich Tires, Accelerom, and Red Bull Saudi Arabia, whose backing was instrumental in her campaign.
Dania Akeel’s victory not only sets a new benchmark in the motorsport arena but also serves as an inspiration for women across the Middle East and beyond. As noted by motorsport analyst Sarah Al-Husseini, “Akeel’s achievements are more than just wins on the track; they represent breaking barriers and reshaping the narrative for women in motorsports globally.”
With the Middle East Baja Cup title secured, Akeel’s focus now shifts to the Jeddah Rally Toyota, the concluding round of the Saudi Toyota Rally Championship, scheduled for December 19-21. Her journey continues to inspire and pave the way for future talents in the motorsport world.
