The 110-page report released by FIFA’s inspection team rates the kingdom’s proposal as a “medium risk,” particularly concerning the extensive construction projects required and the scheduling of the 104-game tournament.
Despite these challenges, Saudi Arabia stands as the sole candidate for the 2034 event after a bidding process initiated in October last year. FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s strong relationship with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been pivotal in advancing the kingdom’s bid, reflecting growing ties between the football governing body and the oil-rich nation.
Saudi Arabia has committed to building 15 new stadiums and numerous hotels, which will demand colossal investment and planning.
The report also highlighted the challenge of selecting the tournament’s timing due to Saudi Arabia’s extreme summer heat, suggesting considerations similar to Qatar’s winter World Cup in 2022 might be necessary.
Sporting analysts suggest that hosting the World Cup could significantly boost Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan, aimed at diversifying its economy and enhancing its global image through sports and entertainment. However, they caution that the success of this endeavor hinges on the kingdom’s ability to address the highlighted risks effectively.
