KBR Secures Technology Contract for Saudi Arabia’s First Biomethanol Plant

Must read

KBR, Inc, a global engineering and technology firm, has been awarded a contract by Fikrat Al-Tadweer to supply its PureMSM green methanol technology for what will become Saudi Arabia’s first large-scale biomethanol production facility.

The project is designed to convert landfill gas into renewable methanol, advancing the Kingdom’s environmental and energy transition goals by capturing methane emissions from waste sites and turning them into commercially viable clean fuel.

Under the terms of the agreement, KBR will provide technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, catalyst supply, and specialised equipment for the biomethanol complex. The company’s PureMSM solution is intended for commercial-scale deployment and emphasizes feedstock flexibility, capable of processing biogas, gasification-derived syngas, hydrogen, and pure CO₂ to produce low-cost renewable methanol.

“This collaboration supports Saudi Arabia’s national policy on eliminating landfill gas emissions and creating sustainable fuels,” said Jay Ibrahim, President of KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions, highlighting the alignment between the project and the Kingdom’s broader sustainability objectives. “It also underscores KBR’s commitment to global energy security and a cleaner, greener future.”

Industry observers note that biomethanol — particularly when produced from waste-derived feedstocks — can play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and diversifying regional fuel supply chains, making the Saudi project a potential benchmark for similar initiatives across the Middle East.

The contract win adds to KBR’s expanding portfolio of low-carbon and sustainable process technology projects, reinforcing its position in the renewable fuels and advanced engineering sectors.
