Egypt has finalized contracts to initiate the construction of a $658 million phosphoric acid complex in the Western Desert. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Egypt’s Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ministry, aims to transform the nation’s approach to its vast mineral resources.
Located at the Abu Tartur Plateau in the New Valley Governorate, the complex is set to produce 250,000 tonnes per year of high-grade phosphoric acid, utilizing locally sourced phosphate ore. This endeavor is a cornerstone of Egypt’s strategic plan to transition from exporting raw minerals to developing a high-value industrial sector.
Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy hailed the project as a “historic move,” noting its potential to establish an integrated industrial value chain. “It symbolizes the third pillar of our strategy, which focuses on maximizing returns from mineral wealth,” Minister Badawy remarked.
The agreement was forged with a Chinese consortium, comprising the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) and East China Engineering Science and Technology Co. (ECEC), marking a crucial international collaboration for Egypt’s mining sector.
Mohammed El-Zamlout, Governor of the New Valley, emphasized the project’s significance in revitalizing the region, which is Egypt’s largest governorate by area but has seen limited industrial development. “This project will be a key aspect in transforming the region into a strategic hub for mining-based industries,” Governor El-Zamlout stated.
Industry experts view this development as pivotal for Egypt’s economic landscape. Dr. Amina Al-Farouq, an economist specializing in Middle Eastern industrial policy, noted that the project could herald a new era of economic sustainability for Egypt. “By moving up the value chain, Egypt not only enhances its economic output but also creates a more resilient industrial sector,” Dr. Al-Farouq explained.
