Iraq has greenlit the development of ‘Palm City,’ a sprawling new city project in Southern Basra. This ambitious initiative, designed to meet modern living standards, will see the construction of approximately 120,000 homes, brought to life by Egypt’s Mountain View Company, China Railway, and Iraq’s Al-Safi Group.
Approved by the Iraqi cabinet, ‘Palm City’ is set to become a cornerstone of Basra’s urban landscape. The project not only includes housing but also integrates essential infrastructure such as hospitals, commercial centers, roads, power facilities, and industrial zones. “This project has been on the cards for a decade, and its approval marks a significant milestone in Iraq’s urban development journey,” stated Basra Governor Asaad Idani in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The collaboration between Egyptian, Chinese, and Iraqi companies symbolizes a strategic alliance that enhances regional ties and economic cooperation. According to a report by GlobalData, Iraq’s construction sector is projected to grow at a steady rate, with infrastructure developments like ‘Palm City’ playing a pivotal role in this expansion. This project is expected to provide a boost to local employment, drawing from both international expertise and local labor.
‘Palm City’ aims to incorporate sustainable practices with green spaces and eco-friendly infrastructure. The inclusion of greening areas highlights Iraq’s commitment to environmental stewardship, a crucial factor in modern urban planning. As part of the project, developers plan to utilize cutting-edge technologies to optimize energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprints.
