In a dynamic meeting that signals Egypt’s commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi recently engaged with Henri Poupart-Lafarge, the Chairman and CEO of Alstom Group. The talks, also attended by Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly and Lieutenant-General Kamel El-Wazir, were a strategic discussion on the progress of key transport projects led by the French conglomerate across Egypt.
Central to the discussions was the ongoing construction of the Alstom industrial complex in Borg El Arab city, a project poised to become a cornerstone of Egypt’s railway industry. This complex will feature two cutting-edge factories—one dedicated to producing electrical systems and railway components, while the other will handle mobile units. These developments not only aim to satisfy domestic market demands but also position Egypt as a pivotal export hub for the Middle East and Africa.
Specialists in the field highlight the significance of this project. Dr. Hossam Fahmy, an expert in transport logistics, notes, “The Borg El Arab complex is a game-changer for local industry, promising job creation and technological advancements.”
Another highlight of the meeting was the advancement of the Sixth Line of the Cairo Metro. As Egypt battles urban congestion, expanding its metro network is a vital step towards sustainable, green mass transit systems. The government aims to create a seamless travel experience for millions of Cairo’s residents, reducing reliance on road transport and cutting down emissions.
Not to be overlooked, the discussions also covered the strategic management and operation of the monorail lines spanning East and West Nile. This project is integral to Egypt’s vision of interconnected urban areas, providing efficient and swift transport options that will redefine city commuting.
President El-Sisi reiterated the importance of adhering to the set timelines for these projects, emphasizing their alignment with Egypt’s broader vision for transport sector development and industry localization. Reports from the International Transport Forum suggest that such projects could significantly boost Egypt’s GDP, with potential annual growth of up to 0.5% attributed to improved transport infrastructure. This growth is expected to have a ripple effect, enhancing trade and fostering regional economic integration.
