The upcoming launch of a roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargo line between Egypt’s Port of Damietta and Italy’s Port of Trieste marks a significant step forward in enhancing bilateral trade. Set to commence operations on November 29, the line is expected to not only foster economic ties but also provide substantial savings in export costs and improved returns for both nations.

The initiative, revealed at the UN Urban conference held in Cairo featuring Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, underscores the strategic vision of Egypt to establish a regional transportation and trade hub, with a particular focus on expanding export markets in Italy and Europe.

The Ro-Ro line is anticipated to act as a “green corridor,” enhancing maritime connectivity and reducing the logistical costs associated with exporting goods. By cutting port fees by 88% and reducing road transit fees for trucks to a flat rate of $100, both countries stand to gain significantly in terms of savings. Such reductions translate into lower overall export costs, making Egyptian goods more competitive in the European market.

Moreover, the streamlined operations provided by the Ro-Ro method—where vehicles and machinery are driven onto the ship at one port and off at the other—enhance efficiency, potentially reducing turnaround times and increasing the frequency of shipments.

For Italy, the introduction of this cargo line promises a consistent influx of Egyptian products, notably agricultural goods, which are expected to meet the growing demand in the Italian and broader European markets. This increased trade volume can lead to enhanced economic returns, fostering a cycle of mutual growth and development.

The collaboration between the two nations is further solidified through the formation of joint working groups and the signing of all necessary legal documents, ensuring the project’s smooth and successful implementation. By reducing logistical barriers and capitalizing on strategic partnerships, Egypt and Italy can maximize the economic benefits derived from this venture.

The Ro-Ro cargo line stands as a testament to the close economic ties and strategic collaboration between Egypt and Italy. As both countries navigate the complexities of global trade, this project serves as a model for how targeted infrastructural investments and cooperative economic strategies can lead to mutual benefits, increased competitiveness, and sustainable growth in international trade.
