Egypt achieved a historic milestone in 2025, welcoming a record 19 million international tourists, marking one of the strongest performances globally as international travel continued its post-pandemic recovery.
According to official figures cited by Egypt’s tourism authorities and supported by international reporting, tourist arrivals rose by 21% year-on-year, significantly outperforming the global average growth rate of around 5%. The surge placed Egypt among the fastest-growing tourism destinations worldwide during the year.
Industry data released in January 2026 by UN Tourism highlighted Egypt’s performance as part of a broader global rebound, with total international tourism export revenues reaching a record $2.2 trillion. Egypt’s expansion stood out for both scale and pace, reflecting renewed confidence among international travellers.
The strong inflow of visitors translated into substantial economic gains. Tourism receipts increased by an estimated 17% in 2025, ranking Egypt among the leading countries globally in revenue growth. Officials attributed the rise to higher visitor volumes, longer stays, and improved service offerings across cultural, leisure, and resort destinations.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities credited several factors behind the record performance, including enhanced security conditions, improved visitor experience, and a significant expansion in air connectivity. Charter flights increased by around 32% during the year, strengthening links with key source markets across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
A major catalyst was the long-awaited opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in late 2025. The museum’s launch generated global attention and reinforced Egypt’s appeal as a premier cultural destination, complementing its established beach, leisure, and heritage tourism offerings.
Egypt’s strong showing comes as international tourism growth is expected to moderate in 2026, with UN Tourism forecasting global expansion of around 3–4% amid geopolitical uncertainty and rising travel costs. Against this backdrop, Egypt is positioning itself as a regional growth driver.
Tourism officials have expressed optimism for the year ahead, projecting a further 5–7% increase in visitor numbers in 2026, supported by continued market diversification and targeted promotion in emerging source markets, particularly Asia.
Authorities say the government will continue to diversify Egypt’s tourism product, expanding beyond traditional cultural tourism to include leisure, adventure, eco-tourism, wellness, and luxury travel, while investing in infrastructure and digital promotion to sustain momentum.
With arrivals at record levels and revenues rising, Egypt’s tourism sector is emerging as a central pillar of economic growth, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s most dynamic tourism markets heading into 2026.
