Remains of King Nyuserre’s Valley Temple Unearthed at Abusir

Must read

Archaeologists working at the Abusir necropolis have uncovered extensive remains of the Valley Temple belonging to the solar complex of King Nyuserre, one of the leading rulers of Egypt’s Fifth Dynasty, in what officials describe as a landmark archaeological discovery.

The excavation, led by Massimiliano Nuzzolo and Rossana Perilli of the Universities of Turin and Naples, revealed more than half of the long-lost structure, confirming a monumental complex exceeding 1,000 square metres. The temple’s distinctive architectural plan places it among the most significant valley temples in the ancient Memphis region.

Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, called the find a “milestone,” noting that this is only the second definitively identified sun temple from the Fifth Dynasty. Although the site was first identified by German Egyptologist Ludwig Borchardt in 1901, excavation was delayed for over a century due to high groundwater levels.

Recent work has uncovered the temple’s main entrance, buried beneath nearly 1.2 metres of Nile silt, along with the original floor, limestone and granite columns, granite door frames, and sections of the stone-lined passage leading to the causeway. A quartzite gateway, an internal staircase to the roof, and a sloping ramp likely connecting the temple to the Nile have also been identified.

The mission also recovered a range of artefacts, including wooden pieces from the ancient board game Senet, finely carved limestone fragments, and pottery dating from the end of the Old Kingdom to the First Intermediate Period. A stone threshold engraved with a hieroglyphic calendar referencing King Nyuserre sheds new light on the temple’s religious functions.

Preliminary findings suggest that after its use as a royal cult site ended, the temple was reused as a small settlement, offering rare insight into daily life during a poorly documented period of ancient Egyptian history. Excavations are set to continue in future seasons to further clarify the role and development of Fifth Dynasty sun temples.
