In a move to enhance the quality and safety of home-renting services, the Egyptian government is set to regulate Airbnb operations, a popular global platform that connects hosts with travelers seeking unique accommodations. This initiative, announced by the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, in an exclusive interview with Asharq Bloomberg, marks a significant step in aligning with Egypt’s ambitious tourism strategy.

The new guidelines, expected to roll out in the coming months, will introduce an accreditation system for properties that meet the Ministry’s stringent standards. This system aims to ensure that accommodations listed on Airbnb, ranging from serviced apartments to private rooms, adhere to high standards of safety, cleanliness, and overall quality.

“To differentiate between approved and non-approved listings, we plan to introduce an accreditation system for properties that meet the ministry’s standards,” Fathy stated. He emphasized that the guidelines would be designed to be both straightforward and practical for hosts to implement.

This regulatory framework is part of Egypt’s broader plan to attract 30 million tourists annually by 2028. The government is actively working to expand the hospitality sector with initiatives such as constructing new hotel rooms and diversifying accommodation options. According to the World Tourism Organization, Egypt’s tourism sector has been experiencing a steady recovery, with a 21% increase in tourist arrivals in 2023 compared to previous years.

Airbnb’s expansion in the Middle East, particularly in Egypt, poses significant opportunities for business growth. According to a report by Market Research Future, the Middle East’s vacation rental market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7% from 2020 to 2025. This growth is driven by increasing demand for unique travel experiences and alternative accommodation options among global travelers. Airbnb’s latest reports assert continuous growth of its business in the region, with a growing interest for 5-6 bedrooms as a growing interest for travellers looking for saving options, while on the other hand, Luxurious apartments comes in second place.

Industry specialists like Ahmed El Naggar, a tourism analyst at the Cairo-based Economic Research Forum, commend this move. “The accreditation system not only elevates the standards of accommodations but also boosts trust among international tourists, which is crucial for sustaining long-term growth in the sector,” El Naggar commented.

As Egypt positions itself as a key player in the Middle Eastern tourism landscape, the introduction of these regulations underscores its commitment to fostering a robust and attractive hospitality environment. The upcoming measures promise to enhance the overall tourist experience, thereby supporting Egypt’s vision of becoming a top global destination in the coming years.
