Uber and Chinese tech giant Baidu have announced a strategic partnership to deploy thousands of autonomous vehicles in select international markets. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Uber as it seeks to strengthen its foothold in the rapidly evolving domain of driverless transportation.
The joint initiative will leverage Baidu’s advanced autonomous driving unit, Apollo Go, which has already established a formidable presence with a fleet of over 1,000 self-driving vehicles operating in 15 cities worldwide, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Since its inception, Apollo Go has successfully completed over 11 million autonomous rides globally, showcasing its capability and reliability in the autonomous vehicle sector.
According to the joint statement, the initial rollout of these self-driving vehicles is scheduled to begin later this year, focusing on key regions across Asia and the Middle East. This strategic choice underscores the regions’ regulatory and infrastructural readiness to accommodate advanced mobility solutions, a vital factor in the global adoption of autonomous technologies.
