Uber targets complete switch to EVs by 2040

Must read

Uber Technologies is taking a significant step forward in its environmental initiatives by introducing an AI-driven assistant aimed at assisting drivers in transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs). This innovation, powered by OpenAI’s advanced GPT-4o model, was announced at Uber’s Go-Get Zero event in London. The AI assistant is scheduled to debut in the United States early next year, with plans to expand its reach to other regions subsequently.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Uber has earmarked an impressive $800 million to aid driver partners in making a complete switch to EVs by 2040. The AI assistant is designed to offer personalized guidance, providing answers tailored to the specific city and available incentives for each driver. Beyond its initial focus on EV-related queries, Uber plans to broaden the scope of this AI tool by early 2025 to address a wider range of inquiries.

With approximately 180,000 Uber drivers transitioning to EVs monthly across North America and Europe, the impact is tangible. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted that drivers on the platform are adopting EVs at a rate five times faster than typical motorists in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, with nearly 30% of all miles driven via Uber in London now being electric.

In support of this transition, Uber is also launching a mentorship program that connects experienced EV drivers with those considering the switch. Furthermore, the company is boosting its sustainability efforts by rewarding top merchants on its food delivery service with $50,000 grants to support their own green initiatives.

To further engage the public, Uber is organizing a series of pop-up events where customers can experience driving an EV. Londoners will have the chance to test the Lotus Eletre, while those in Los Angeles, Miami, and Dallas can reserve rides in a Rivian R1.

This strategic move aligns with global trends, as cities and companies are increasingly prioritizing emissions reduction and sustainable practices. Recent reports from reputable sources like The Guardian and Forbes emphasize the importance of such initiatives, noting that the global EV market is projected to expand significantly, driven by both consumer demand and regulatory pressures. This evolution positions Uber at the forefront of the transportation industry’s shift toward a greener future.
