Morocco’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) has opened tenders for 5G licenses, inviting telecommunications companies to lay the groundwork for next-generation mobile services by November. This initiative aligns with the country’s Maroc Digital 2030 strategy, which aims to integrate advanced mobile technology into Morocco’s economic and social fabric.
The call for tenders was announced in an official statement by ANRT, detailing the regulatory framework and the technical and financial prerequisites for establishing 5G networks. The documentation outlines coverage, quality-of-service obligations, and comprehensive guidelines for the tender process, ensuring a competitive and transparent selection.
Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco’s Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, previously stated that the government targets a November 2025 launch, coinciding with the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The ministry envisions 5G networks covering 25% of the population by 2026 and expanding to 70% by 2030, a significant stride towards enhancing connectivity and technological infrastructure.
Morocco’s telecom giants are already paving the way for this digital transformation. In recent developments, Orange Maroc has partnered with Ericsson to facilitate its standalone 5G rollout. Meanwhile, in a bid to expedite the deployment of fiber optic and 5G technologies, Maroc Telecom and Inwi have entered into a collaborative agreement to consolidate their telecom infrastructure.
Dr. Hicham Ait Mansour, a telecommunications expert at the University of Casablanca, commented on these advancements, “The move to 5G is not just about faster internet speeds; it represents a monumental shift in how Morocco will conduct business, improve healthcare, and bolster its economy through enhanced digital services.”
As Morocco gears up for this technological upgrade, the integration of 5G is expected to revolutionize industries such as transportation, healthcare, and agriculture, meeting specific national needs and driving forward the digital economy.
