The Role of Smart Technologies in Egypt’s Airport Revolution

Must read

Egypt is set to reap substantial benefits from adopting smart baggage solutions across 11 major airports. This development comes as the North African nation embarks on an ambitious project to upgrade its aviation infrastructure. According to George Fenergi, Regional Vice President at aviation technology provider SITA, these advancements are poised to transform the passenger experience and fuel economic growth.

Fenergi’s insights were shared during the launch of SITA’s “Baggage IT Insights 2025” report. He highlighted that the recent inauguration of the Smart Control Center (SCC) in Cairo is a testament to Egypt’s dedication to digital transformation within the aviation sector. “The SCC in Cairo showcases Egypt’s commitment to leveraging technology for real-time oversight and improved operational coordination,” he commented.

Key to this transformation is the implementation of automated self-service bag drops, real-time tracking, and AI-driven analytics. Such innovations promise to enhance operational efficiency, minimize mishandling rates, and align Egypt’s airports with international standards. “These technological advancements not only improve passenger experiences but also align with Egypt’s broader objectives of boosting tourism and economic development,” Fenergi added, emphasizing Egypt’s potential to emerge as a regional leader in smart aviation.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, is playing a crucial role in this evolution. Collaborating with the Egyptian government, IFC is advising on the integration of public-private partnerships (PPPs) at the targeted airports. These partnerships aim to improve infrastructure, connectivity, and passenger services, ensuring that Egypt’s aviation sector is poised for a brighter future.
