CAIRO, In a significant move aimed at stabilizing Somalia, Egypt has deployed troops under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). This initiative is intended to support the fight against the militant group Al-Shabaab and contribute to peace efforts in the region.
Ethiopia has expressed cautious support for Egypt’s involvement. Meles Alem, spokesperson for the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, acknowledged the importance of regional security but voiced concerns about Egypt’s broader strategic intentions, especially regarding the Nile River and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). In response to regional tensions, Ethiopia has reportedly increased its military presence along its border.
The African Union has welcomed Egypt’s participation, with Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat highlighting the significance of collective security efforts. The United States also supports Egypt’s involvement, viewing it as a positive step toward regional stability. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism.
The European Union commended Egypt’s commitment to regional stability. Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed the EU’s readiness to support peace and security efforts in Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed gratitude for Egypt’s support, hoping that the additional troops will bolster efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in Somalia. However, Al-Shabaab has condemned the deployment, labeling foreign troops as an occupation force and vowing to continue their fight against AMISOM forces.
Reports indicate that Al-Shabaab remains a potent force, capable of conducting significant attacks despite pressure from AMISOM. The militant group controls large swathes of rural territory and continues to pose a substantial threat to peace and security in Somalia. AMISOM, supported by international partners, has made strides in weakening Al-Shabaab but faces ongoing challenges in completely eradicating the group’s influence.
