Must read

The highly anticipated fourth edition of the Egypt Mining Forum launched this week in Cairo, highlighting the theme “Accelerating Commercial Discovery, Exploration, Extraction, and Value Added from Raw Materials.” The forum, scheduled for July 15-16, aims to showcase Egypt’s mining potential to a global audience of industry leaders and investors.

Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is set to inaugurate the forum, setting the stage for discussions that underscore Egypt’s strategic initiatives in the mining sector. The event promises high-level participation from notable figures, including Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, who will advocate for sustainable and green mining practices in Egypt.

The forum aligns with Egypt’s ambitious plans to transform its mining sector. A pivotal change is the establishment of the Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority, tasked with revamping agreements and legislation to align with international standards, thus creating a conducive investment climate. According to industry experts, these reforms are expected to amplify the mining sector’s contribution to the GDP from under 1% to 5-6%, positioning Egypt as a regional hub for mining industries.

Dr. Yasmine Fouad remarked, “Our focus on green mining is essential not just for environmental sustainability, but for positioning Egypt at the forefront of global mining innovation.”

The forum will see participation from global industry giants like Barrick Gold and AngloGold Ashanti. Gillian Doran, CEO of AngloGold Ashanti, will present insights on their investments in Egypt, particularly at the Sukari mine. Her presentation is expected to highlight how international collaborations can fuel local economic growth and innovation.

In a special session, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, will discuss regional cooperation, while the Deputy Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia, Eng. Khaled Al-Mudaifer, will share insights on regional mining initiatives.

The forum’s agenda extends beyond exploration and extraction, delving into legislative reforms, technological advancements, and local manufacturing of raw materials. These discussions aim to maximize the value of Egypt’s mineral resources, creating long-term economic benefits.

The event is expected to attract over 5,000 visitors and 300 delegates, with various sessions focusing on digital transformation, investment portals, and Egypt’s strategic position in the Arab-Nubian Shield. The discussions will provide a platform for stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation in Egypt’s budding mining industry.

Patrick Barnes, Vice President of Wood Mackenzie International, emphasized the significance of technological integration, stating, “The use of cutting-edge technology in mining operations will be crucial for Egypt to maintain a competitive edge globally.”

The forum also promises to address the role of governors in fostering a favorable investment climate within their regions, with sessions featuring governors from key Egyptian governorates.
