Egypt has taken a significant step in modernising its healthcare supply chain with the launch of a new unified digital portal by the Unified Procurement Authority (UPA), bringing together procurement, logistics, and medical technology management into a single national platform for the health sector.
The portal consolidates UPA’s core services into one digital access point, enabling suppliers, manufacturers, and public health institutions to engage with Egypt’s medical procurement ecosystem through a streamlined and transparent interface. Officials say the initiative is designed to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance coordination across the entire healthcare value chain.
At the core of the platform’s value is its ability to standardise and digitalise procurement processes. By integrating tendering, supplier onboarding, logistics coordination, and medical technology oversight, the system reduces fragmentation that has traditionally slowed public healthcare procurement. Centralised data and electronic workflows are expected to shorten procurement cycles, improve forecasting, and strengthen auditability, reinforcing transparency across public spending on healthcare.
The platform also serves as the main electronic gateway to Egypt’s unified procurement system, MediQ, allowing suppliers and manufacturers to interact with public health buyers through a single, consistent digital channel.
UPA officials emphasise that the portal is a strategic tool to support the localisation of medical manufacturing in Egypt. By providing clearer visibility into demand, procurement plans, and technical requirements, the system is expected to encourage domestic producers to scale up, invest, and align with public sector needs.
Beyond the domestic market, the platform is positioned as a bridge to African markets. Developed in cooperation with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, it is designed to facilitate coordination with African partners, including the exchange of regulatory information and procurement data. This interoperability supports Egypt’s ambition to become a regional hub for medical supplies, health logistics, and emergency response across the continent.
The digital portal aligns with Egypt’s broader healthcare reform agenda, particularly the phased rollout of the Universal Health Insurance System, Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS). As public healthcare coverage expands, the need for efficient, scalable, and transparent procurement mechanisms has become increasingly critical.
The initiative also fits squarely within Egypt’s Vision 2030, which prioritises digital transformation, local value creation, and export-oriented growth. By modernising procurement infrastructure and linking it to regional markets, the platform supports both fiscal sustainability and industrial development objectives.
Established in 2019, the UPA was mandated to centralise and professionalise public health procurement through value-based and evidence-driven purchasing. The new digital portal represents a structural upgrade to that mandate, transforming procurement from a transactional function into a data-driven, strategic system capable of supporting national healthcare resilience and regional leadership.
As Egypt continues to increase healthcare spending and deepen its role in African health cooperation, the platform is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring reliable access to medicines, medical devices, and technologies—while positioning Cairo as a key node in the continent’s evolving health logistics and procurement landscape.
