Egypt and Kenya have elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic and comprehensive partnership. This significant development was marked by a joint declaration signed by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Kenyan President William Ruto during Ruto’s visit to Cairo. The leaders’ meeting highlighted a shared vision for advancing sustainable development across Africa.
The partnership agreement encompasses 12 pivotal sectors, including political consultations, diplomatic training, and investment promotion. Noteworthy areas of collaboration also include port cooperation, youth initiatives, space exploration, communications and IT, higher education, gender equality, and urban development. “Egypt is one of our key strategic partners,” President Ruto affirmed at a joint press conference, emphasizing the mutual commitment to fostering sustainable growth on the continent.
According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), trade between the two nations reached $567 million in 2024, a slight decrease from $638 million in 2023. Despite this shift, the depth of cooperation reflects a robust economic alliance, with Egypt’s long-standing support for sustainable development playing a crucial role.
Since 1993, Egypt has contributed significantly to Kenya’s water management capabilities, including the drilling of 180 wells, as part of a memorandum of understanding. The collaboration intensified with a 2016 project focused on optimizing water resources, implementing modern irrigation techniques, and constructing rainwater harvesting dams. This initiative aims to bolster Kenya’s technical skills and improve water resource management, essential for agricultural advancement and resilience against climate change.
During his speech in Cairo, President Ruto stressed the necessity of a comprehensive strategy to combat terrorism and enhance peace and stability in Africa. He lauded Egypt’s vital role in these efforts, calling for collaborative solutions that encompass the broader African context.
