Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra was in Cairo seeking Egyptian support for her bid to become the next UN secretary-general, following on from her visit to Angola earlier in the week.
Both countries are currently members of the UN Security Council, which must formally nominate a consensus candidate for the General Assembly to approve.
Malcorra told the EFE news agency that the primary objective of her visit to Egypt was to seek Cairo’s support for her candidacy and strengthen mutual cooperation of the two countries. The Foreign minister said that her meeting with her counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, also included a discussion over Argentine-Egyptian relations. She called the meeting “very fruitful.”
Furthermore, Malcorra praised Cairo’s safety and urged Argentinians to visit Egyptian museums and mosques. During her three-day visit, she stated that she could see the general state of stability and security of Cairo’s streets.
“Egypt’s positive public image should be spread among other countries, adding that the Argentinian Ambassador said that Cairo’s streets do not witness robberies.”
“It is my first priority if I hold the UN secretary-general position to achieve sustainable development and equal opportunities to all the world’s countries. In addition to achieving peace and security, reaching agreements and presenting effective solutions to the world’s countries, along with stressing on human rights”, Malcorra said.
In regard to Malcorra’s viewpoint of Moushira Khattab’s nomination to UNESCO director-general position, she believes that Khattab is equal to the task and has a great chance of winning the post as both of them met. “She has a wide area of expertise and a charismatic speaker”, Malcorra says.
