A Breakthrough in Heart Valve Treatment in Egypt

The National Heart Institute has announced a groundbreaking achievement in heart surgery, enabling patients to undergo valve implantation and leave the hospital the following day. The institute’s recent success with pulmonary valve implantations using the innovative MYVAL valve represents a significant leap in cardiology, as posted on the official website of the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Ghaffar, Chairman of the General Authority for Hospitals and Educational Institutes, highlighted the modern transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation (TPV) technique. This procedure serves as a safer alternative to traditional open-heart surgery, allowing for the insertion of a new valve via a catheter without the need for a chest incision or stopping the heart. This method dramatically decreases associated risks like severe bleeding and infections, while also shortening recovery time.

Dr. Mohamed Abdel Hadi, Director of the National Heart Institute, emphasized the institute’s commitment to utilizing cutting-edge technologies to enhance the treatment of heart patients. Leading the successful implementation was a distinguished medical team headed by Dr. Rania Diaa El-Din Abu Shoka, along with team members Dr. Ahmed El-Sherbiny, Dr. Mai Mohamed Saber, Dr. Ahmed Alaa Hamed, and the institute’s catheterization team.

The operations were notably enriched by the collaboration with international expert Dr. Shivakumar, whose scientific and technical expertise contributed significantly to the achievement. Thanks to these advancements, patients can now expect a quick recovery, often being discharged within 24 to 48 hours.

The heartfelt gratitude was extended to all contributors, especially the “Loyalty to Egypt” Foundation, which generously covered the costs of the valves for four patients during the month of Ramadan, a gesture amounting to approximately one million Egyptian pounds per patient.

This pioneering effort not only enhances patient outcomes and quality of life but also sets a new benchmark in the field of cardiology, reflecting Egypt’s growing prowess in adopting life-saving medical innovations and technologies.
