A separate study published earlier this year found that the Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of death by nearly a quarter in women. The study, which followed more than 25,000 healthy middle-aged American women with an average age of 55, found that those who adhered to a diet rich in fish, legumes, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains had a 23 percent lower risk of dying by the end of the 25-year study period.
