Egypt’s ELAB Achieves Record LAB Output in 2025, Plans Capacity Expansion

Must read

CAIRO Egypt’s Egyptian Linear Alkyl Benzene Company (ELAB) has recorded its highest production levels since operations began in 2008, as the petrochemical producer moves to expand storage capacity and increase output to meet rising global and domestic demand.

Speaking during the company’s 2025 general assembly meeting, Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi praised ELAB as a flagship of Egypt’s petrochemical sector, highlighting its role in supplying high-value industrial inputs while generating export revenues.

The company produced 141,000 tonnes of linear alkyl benzene (LAB) in 2025, the highest level since its launch, according to ELAB Chairman Ayman El-Garem. LAB is the primary feedstock used in the manufacture of industrial and household detergents.

El-Garem said the company successfully met domestic demand while exporting surplus output to markets across Western Europe, Africa, and Asia, reinforcing Egypt’s position in global petrochemical supply chains.

ELAB is now implementing a project to increase LAB production capacity, part of a broader strategy aligned with the petroleum ministry’s development plans for the sector.

The company has also improved resource efficiency by coordinating with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) to optimize kerosene feedstock supplies. Around 80% of the kerosene used as feedstock is now converted into internationally compliant jet fuel, significantly increasing value addition.

In line with Egypt’s sustainability goals, ELAB has transformed its administrative headquarters into a fully green building, installing a 465-kilowatt solar power plant to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.

Badawi emphasized the importance of strict safety standards in petrochemical operations and encouraged the company to continue monitoring regional and global competitors while pursuing new product opportunities over the next five years
